Brook's Corner

For the past few days, my little cousins Hunter, Brook and Autumn have been staying up here with my Aunt and Uncle to give the parentals a break (pft, right), and Brook is a very opinionated little 3-year-old. She usually had a strong liking to me since she was a baby and visited on the weekends, and clung to me like the old days (that aren’t that old) and started talking to me and asking me different questions. She’s in the “why?” stage.

Briefly put, I thought some of her questions were interesting and/or funny, so I thought I’d make a point to list them all out and look back on them later. Keep in mind I’m putting them in her point of view…

1. If Andrea is a grown up, and Daddy is a grown up too, then why is Andrea shorter than Daddy?

I personally found that kind of intriguing. She’s a bit too young to properly understand the genetics of it all, so I tried to put it as a ratio she might be able to understand: “Daddy is older than Andrea. Hunter is older than Brook. Hunter is taller than Brook, so Daddy is taller than Andrea.” I’m not quite sure how well she understood it, but it was cute.

2. Why do I have yellow hair (in the picture)?

Now, my cousins Courtney and Will are both blondes descended from at least 1 blond parent/grandparent and so forth. On Will’s (also my) side of the family, his mom (my aunt) and his grandmother have the genetics to be so blonde, that they’re hair is practically white. My aunt’s hair lost most of its pigment and you can barely even tell unless the light hits it, then she has butter-cream highlights. For Courtney, she’s a pretty light-set blonde herself. this gives Brook the hair color of the prettiest (almost white looking) straight yellow hair. That’s the version for all of you to understand, but I simply told her it’s because she has blonde hair in real life, and when she asked why to that I said because Mommy had yellow hair too.

3. Why does Mommy have blue eyes like me and Hunter and Daddy?

I must admit by now, the genetic questions she has are definitely aimed at the right person, but she’s at least 6 or so years too young to be able to comprehend it completely (and my comprehending completely, I mean that I give answers that will make a talkative 3-year-old who says “why” to everything be quiet). I told her it’s because God wanted them to match. She was pretty satisfied with that answer.

4. Why do spiders have to stay outside? Why can’t they be inside?

Originally, this was aimed toward my uncle, but he didn’t give the answer to make her stop asking questions. He had originally said that it was because you don’t want them there, and when she asked why he said it was because they were messy. I had to intervene since she didn’t understand, and I told her that it was because “spiders bring too many friends inside with them, and then they don’t pick up their toys and they leave them all over the place.” She understood in a heartbeat.
